Malta EU-Enlargement

The client
Gert Hof for the government of Malta

The challenge
Arrangement of a multimedia show on the occasion of the central celebrations for the EU-Enlargement in the harbour of Malta.

The solution
In co-operation with light designer Gert Hof, we presented the pyrotechnics. The Europe unifying light spectacle “Welcome Europe” took place as part of the ZDF Eurovision Gala. By order of the government of Malta the show was set in the harbour of Vittoriosa, a city next to the Maltese castle St. Angelo near the capital Valetta.
“Welcome Europe” was a gigantic artwork of fireworks, lights, architecture and music. The scenery of the crusader area was used as a dramatic element in the show. In a breathtaking way the castle on the isle in the harbour was illuminated by pyrotechnics and lights. 25 ships, arranged with forceful red and green fires captured the spectators. Furthermore we projected the letters of “Welcome Europe” on water screens. Above the castle you were able to see the projections of the 25 EU-flags. The spectacle was accompanied by live music from Roger Water (Pink Floyd) who debuted with a new melody that evening.
In addition to the celebrations on Malta, we arranged the EU-enlargement shows in Berlin, Warsaw and Strasbourg. In Berlin it was the concert hall at the Gendarmenmarkt we put into scene. In Warsaw the new general office of Daimler Chrysler was dedicated at the same time. In Strasbourg the new EU-states were welcomed by two fireworks on the new bridge connecting France and Germany by us.
